De briefwisseling van Guido Gezelle.

De tekst werd diplomatisch getranscribeerd, en aangevuld met een editoriale laag.

De oorspronkelijke tekst werd ongewijzigd getranscribeerd; alleen typografische regeleindes en afbrekingstekens, en niet-betekenisvolle witruimte werden genormaliseerd.

Auteursingrepen in de tekst (toevoegingen, schrappingen), en latere redactie-ingrepen (schrappingen, toevoegingen, taalkundige notities) door de lezer werden overgenomen en expliciet gemarkeerd.

Voor een aantal tekstfenomenen werden naast de oorspronkelijke vorm ook editeursingrepen opgenomen in de transcriptie: oplossingen voor niet-gangbare afkortingen en correcties voor manifeste fouten. Daarnaast bevat de transcriptie editeursingrepen ter verbetering van de leesbaarheid (toevoegingen, reconstructies) of ter motivering van transcriptie-beslissingen (aanduiding van onzekere lezingen, weglating van onleesbare tekst). Alle editeursingrepen worden expliciet gemarkeerd.

When I was living some 18 or 19 years ago with my husband & two little <+Baby> girls at Bruges, Quai Ste Anne - you often came to see us, & I always think of you with great esteem & respect. We used to interchange books sometimes I lending you some of mine that interested you & you bringing me yours to see - I have found among my books one that I have not come {<-[x]><+a>}cross for a very long time & I cannot be sure if it is yours or mine, It is called it is bound in white parchment. I have felt quite scrupelous about it, for fear it should be one of yours that through some mistake was never returned & have fears of suffering in Purgatory for it! I have procured the address on this letter from a Priest at St Anne's in Bruges, I suppose the Curé as I adressed my letter of inquiry to him, so I hope my letter will reach you - Will you write & tell me if the above book is yours, & if there is any other you miss - that you lent Mr. Kavanagh, or myself - On my return to England, my husband sold the greater part of my books, furniture &c - so that numbers of works {<-that><+went>} recklessly & many sets spoiled by odd vols - being sold - for I never saw the things, on the sale - If the book I have is yours I will return it to you - & if you name any other I will look for it among the few books I have now & if I do not find it, I hope you will understand that I have not willingly detained it & forgive our carelessness if it has been overlooked before we left Belgium - I have been living apart from my husband the last 15 years - My two little girls are now grown up young ladies. And I manage to keep a home for them here, & keep them in their own rank of life {<=tho'>[=though]} my means are so small it is with difficulty I manage to do so. They are very dear good girls, a great comfort to me, & beloved by all who know them We have a lovely Church here, very zealous, good Priests & all our services so well carried out. Tell me how you are - what position you hold at Courtray - & how long you have been there. Do you remember my son Edward Vavasour a boy who walked in the Procession of the St Sang. as Philipe le Bel with the sons of the "Van Calouns"? He went to New Zealand for some years, & has now come to England hav{<-[x]><+i>}ng been very unfortunate after very successful farming in which he invested all his money, by unexpected & unfortunate circumstances lost all! He is at present with me, but most anxious to get some employment - My eldest son is now Sir William Vavasour - Do write to me soon & make my mind easy about your books if I have any & let me know your correct address Pray for - {<=Yrs>[=Yours]} sincerely & respectfully M.C.     Dotty en Blanche Kavanagh zijn de dochters uit haar tweede huwelijk en zijn in april 1889 respectievelijk 23 en 22 jaar oud.

    Tijdens Gezelles Kortrijkse periode is hij meermaals verhuisd. Tussen 1880 en 1894 was zijn adres aldaar Handboogstraat 13.

    Op de parochie van Sint-Anna was Edmond Van Lede (1828-1912) pastoor van 1869-1893 en Petrus Welvaert (1843-1897) onderpastoor van 1875 tot november 1889.

    Uit de documenten van de echtscheidingsprocedure uit 1887 blijkt dat Mary en Maurice niet meer samenleefden sinds 1875, toen hij in India ging werken. Na zijn terugkeer in 1782 zijn de echtelieden niet meer gaan samenwonen. Mary’s getuigenis spreekt voorts over hoe Maurice tijdens hun huwelijk ”by his drunkenness and extravagance caused great misery and unhappiness to me while we lived together and greatly reduced my Property”. Voor haar hoefde het samenleven dus niet meer.

    Mogelijk doelde ze op de Heilige Bloedprocessie van 3 mei 1869. In De Westvlaming van 1 mei 1869 staat een uitgebreid overzicht van alle groepen die mee zullen opstappen op deze 50ste editie. Zo lezen we dat leerlingen van het Sint-Lodwijkscollege zich rond de standaard van de Passie scharen, en dat een van de leerlingen de figuur van Filips de Schone zou uitbeelden, onder wiens heerschappij het broederschap van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van de Zeven Weeën werd ingesteld. Edward Vavasour, die toen 13 was, en de zonen van Caloen - Joseph (°1853), Albert (°1856) en Ernest (°1859) - zouden dus van de partij geweest zijn, hoewel zij geen leerlingen waren aan het Sint-Lodewijkscollege. Een verklaring zou dan kunnen zijn dat Savina van Caloen daartoe haar invloed had uitgeoefend.

    Ze bedoelt eigenlijk Philippe Le Beau, want het was onder deze hertog dat het broederschap van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van de Zeven Weeën in 1499 werd opgericht. Philippe le Bel was de Franse koning van 1285 tot 1314.
